FRACTURE AND FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF STEEL STRUCTURES - THE IMPORTANCE OF DETAILS

The importance of proper design of structural details to prevent fracture and fatigue problems in steel structures is often not appreciated. Fracture problems in steel structures originally were viewed as a materials problem to be solved by metallurgists. However, this is just not so. Fracture and fatigue problems in steel structures never have been just material problems; they are a result of a combination of factors including loading, design, fabrication, and material properties. Thus, prevention of fracture and fatigue problems depends on the structural engineer using the appropriate design, fabrication, and materials selection for a given loading condition. Fracture and fatigue control must become part of the structural design process.
