NEW YORK CITY'S ARTERIAL CORRIDOR ACCIDENT REDUCTION PROGRAM

Within New York City (NYC), experience has shown that over 70% of all fatal accidents occur on arterial type streets. In order to improve safety on their arterial roadways, the NYC Department of Transportation is undertaking an expansive program aimed at improving safety while maintaining adequate traffic flow conditions. The program entails an examination of an arterial and the development of primarily low-cost or noncapital-intensive type traffic engineering improvements aimed at improving safety. The program also attempts to make use of the expanding computerized traffic signal network.
