This paper describes the properties of Synchronous Surface Dressing (SSD), which was developed by a French company. The many forms of surface dressing provide a wide variety of solutions to many road maintenance problems. Specific techniques or particular dressing formulae can be applied to individual road needs. The use of surface dressings is a very popular method in France, because of its many advantages. The paper covers: (1) the performance levels expected in surface dressing; (2) synchronous spreading; (3) the tests necessary for applying SSD (dosages of aggregates and binder, binder-aggregates relation, and spreading equipment); (4) The Rampadhoc, Gravidhoc, and Topadhoc quality control tests; and (5) chip sealer equipment for spreading SSD. SSD is found to meet the levels of road quality expected by road users. It is very suitable for providing a cost-effective wearing course for roads with low and medium traffic; it can be used there instead of a costly premixed wearing course. The Stopper - 26 R chip sealer can be used effectively for road maintenance in India in all weathers, and arrangements are being made there for its use in both emulsion and bitumen binders. SSD is an innovative modern technique, which ensures excellent road maintenance performance.
