The Green Line of the Los Angeles Transportation Authority runs either down the median of the Glenn Andersen Freeway, I-105, or is on elevated structure. In the Freeway length of the system a wayside intrusion detection system has been fitted using stretched wire detectors specially designed to give warning of objects which may intrude from the freeway, and in the platform areas intrusion plates are fitted between the rails to give warning of patrons who may fall into the trainway. These systems were fitted to deal with present day hazards and also as a precursor to possible eventual operation of the line in a full driverless mode. In ordwr to increase the levle of confidence that unwanted objects would not obstruct the path of the trains a development was undertaken in conjunction with the purchase of the vehicle fleet to provide radar based obstacle detection.
