BLENDING AC DRIVE EQUIPMENT WITH EXISTING DC CHOPPERS ON LOS ANGELES COUNTY MTA RED LINE CARS

The paper describes performance compatibility and EMI testing on prototype cars. The testing was necessitated because the system ordered 42 new cars that used the existing 30 car design with significant changes. The design changes included: additional features to be ADA compliant; change of propulsion subsystem from DC chopper to AC inverter drive; change of propulsion equipment cooling from forced ventilation to convection cooling; change of auxiliary power supply from one per car chopper unit to one per pair IGBT unit; two additional passenger seats per car; and other 'lessons learned' type improvements. The testing of the prototype cars proved successful.
