The Denver region continues to move forward in building on its demonstration light rail system despite a resounding defeat of the latest tax proposal to fund a region wide system of light rail, commuter rail and high occupancy vehicle lanes. The Southwest Corridor, a light rail extension to the existing Central Corridor system is under major construction and is on schedule for an operational date in 2000. This project was the RTD's first major project to be designed with an in-house design engineering team and appears to be a smashing success. With many lessons learned, the team is taking the design into construction at a substantial time as well as monetary savings to the district.
