FLORIDA: THE WORLD'S SHOWPIECE FOR AUTOMATED PEOPLE MOVERS
The first Automated People Mover (APM) started operation in 1971 in the Tampa International Airport. Since then, several APMs have been built in airports, downtowns, university campuses, theme parks, and other major activity centers around the world. In this modern transit technology of APMs, Florida has a unique place with nine APMs. Including the first APM, Florida has three downtown people movers (Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville), three airport people movers (Miami, Orlando and Tampa), and three theme park people movers (Walt Disney World in Orlando, Busch Gardens in Tampa, and Metro Zoo in Miami). With the nine people movers which exhibit APM technologies of different system suppliers such as Bombardier, Intamin, Otis, Unimobil, Wedway, and Westinghouse, Florida is the world's showpiece for APMs. This paper presents the preeminence of Florida in APMs through brief descriptions of the systems that are operating in the state.
