DAMAGE BY DELAYED ETTRINGITE FORMATION

An holistic approach has been used to re-examine the four principal causes of concrete deterioration: sulfate attack, alkali-silica reaction (ASR), corrosion of reinforcing steel, and freeze-thaw cycles. In this article, the mechanism of delayed ettringite formation (DEF) is addressed from the holistic perspective. The term DEF is used to indicate ettringite-related deterioration of concrete in a sulfate-free environment, regardless of whether or not the concrete member had been subjected to steam curing.
