10 YEAR ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION - RUNWAY 9-27 LCF PAVEMENT. GEORGE BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT - HOUSTON
In 1986, Runway 9-27 and Taxiways SC through SK were constructed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport-Houston using a multilayered stabilized base pavement. The pavement base material is LCF, an acronym for Lime-Cement-Fly ash, the cementing agents used in the material mix. LCF is a designed combination of sands and gravels along with lime, cement, and fly ash in such proportions to attain a target design strength when compacted in place. One of the principal characteristics of LCF is its strength gain over an extended time as opposed to other conventional base materials. Because of its newness and little performance data being available, many pavement engineers accepted the concept with some skepticism. This paper is derived from an engineering study performed on Runway 9-27 as part of a planned surface rehabilitation program for the runway.
