POLYMER MODIFIED ASPHALT AT HOUSTON'S HOBBY AIRPORT

With increased demands made on airfield pavements, design engineers are searching for new ways to improve pavement performance and reduce life cycle costs. Polymer modified asphalts can reduce life cycle material and construction costs, and have given excellent performance at many airports throughout the world. The Federal Aviation Administration has recognized the value of polymer modified asphalts, and has published an engineering brief with specifications for their use. When the city of Houston rehabilitated one of the taxiways at Hobby Airport, polymer modified asphalt was included in the bid specifications. The project, which was started in early 1996, was constructed with a Type I Styrene-Butadiene block copolymer chemically reacted in asphalt.
