HAHN AIR-INDUSTRIAL PARK(R) - A CASE STUDY FOR MILITARY AIRFIELD CONVERSIONS

Hahn Air-Industrial Park(R) is a successful example of the potential of converting former military airfields into a civilian enterprise. One of the many unique aspects of Han is the market strategy, which is focused on the landside elements of the site rather than on the airfield components. Hahn is a private-public partnership that combines the long-term perspective of the regional government with the commercial perspective of private partners. In spite of its location within the shadow of three major European airports -- Cologne, Frankfurt, and Luxembourg -- the owners have crated a unique presence and successfully attracted airlines, freight forwarders, manufacturers, and others to the complex. This paper describes the process used to develop the market and development strategy for Hahn as a commercial operation and the results of that strategy.
