PROCEDURE TO ESTIMATE THE ORIGIN-DESTINATION MATRIX FROM MARGINAL TRIP TOTALS AND ORDINAL INFORMATION ON MATRIX ELEMENTS

This paper proposes a methodology that uses ordinal information, the marginal trip totals and traffic volume counts on the links, to obtain the origin-destination (O-D) trip demand matrix from population survey data. One reason for this is that such ordinal information can be obtained relatively easily and with very little resources. The structure of the methodology proposed is such that it can incorporate information on past O-D matrices and other such cardinal information on O-D elements. The methodology is tested on five test matrices and on three large O-D matrices.
