IMPROVING THE BENEFITS OF RAIL GRINDING

A technical and economic assessment of the efficiency of rail grinding shows that if the service life of the rail is increased by a factor of 1.5, the rail grinding process results in a saving of roughly half the cost of buying new rails. The article looks at the Russian Railways efforts to continue to improve the economic benefits of rail grinding by introducing the grinding of switches as the next step in improving the service characteristics of the rail head, and to increase track life.
