RAILROAD SAFETY RESEARCH

The highest priority of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is the safety of the U.S. railroad system. The demands on this system are continually growing, and technology developments provide an opportunity to improve system effectiveness and efficiency while also enhancing safety. FRA addresses safety concerns in all phases of railroad operations through research and development, as well as regulatory and enforcement activities. This article outlines changes and trends in rail operations and safety, and describes FRA's safety-related objectives and activities as reflected in the agency's "Five-Year Strategic Plan for Research, Development, and Demonstrations."
