A NOVEL TRAFFIC STREAM MODEL DERIVING FROM A BIMODAL KINETIC EQUILIBRIUM

The traffic stream model corresponding to the (bimodal) local equilibrium solution of the kinetic equation of Nelson is presented, and shown to compare favorably, for densities not too near jam density, to several selected classical traffic stream models. It is argued that the bimodal traffic stream model is preferable, in that all of its parameters are related to a microscopic model of driver behavior (and road characteristics). Some operational consequences (i.e., pertaining to measurements) of the kinetic equilibrium interpretation of traffic stream models are discussed.
