TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS OF URBAN HOUSEHOLDS IN HARARE, ZIMBABWE

This paper describes the results of a travel behaviour study implemented in Harare, Zimbabwe which the authors believe is the first of its kind to have been implemented in the city. The objective of the study was to examine daily trip and travel patterns undertaken by urban households in Harare. Relationships between factors such as income, trip rate, distance and trip purpose are assessed. Modal split trends as well as gender issues are also analysed. The findings significantly contribute knowledge and understanding on travel characteristics in a typical African capital city.
