MODIFIED BINDERS, BINDERS WITH ADDITIVES AND SPECIAL BITUMENS

This report on the use of modified bituminous binders, special bitumens and bitumens with additives in road pavements was prepared by a Working Group including members of PIARC Technical Committee C8 which is concerned with flexible roads. The report is in two parts. In part 1 there is a review of the different agents used to modify bitumen, questions of compatibility, and the way in which the modification or additive alters the physical properties of the original bitumen. The review is in 8 sections: (1) historical background, classification and development of modified bitumen, special bitumens and use of additivies; (2) examination of the concepts of compatibility between bitumen and polymers; (3) properties and conditions for manufacture and use; (4) modified emulsions; (5) additives used - polyolefin polymers, recycled plastic, rubber aggregates, fibres, natural bitumen and asphalt; (6) special bitumens which include hard bitumens, multigrade type bitumens, synthetic pigmentable binders and special high float emulsions; (7) examples of use of materials; and (8) particular aspects of construction using bituminous concretes and surface dressing with modified bitumens or special bitumens. Part two of this report presents the results of a survey of member countries of the World Road Association (PIARC) covering such aspects as the current level of use of these materials. (The French title is: Les liants modifies, les liants avec additifs et les bitumes speciaux).
