HONG KONG'S RAILWAYS: NOW AND THE FUTURE

This article reviews the control and instrumentation features in Hong Kong's current and planned tunnels, and the ITC international conference on tunnel control and instrumentation being held in Hong Kong on 8-10 February 1999. The conference aims to bring together parties interested in tunnel design, planning, construction, and operation, and especially in control and instrumentation systems and equipment, to exchange information and experience. Its topics include: (1) traffic control and surveillance systems; (2) intelligent systems; (3) communication systems; (4) environmental and energy management systems; (6) control room technology; and (7) ventilation systems. All these applications are currently being used by Hong Kong's two railway companies, the Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation (KCR) and the MTR Corporation. During recent years, Hong Kong has had an ever-increasing activity level in planning, designing and constructing new railways, and upgrading existing lines. These railways have extensive lengths of tunnels. Both the KCR and the MTR have just completed major projects for upgrading their signalling and train control systems. KCR has installed an automatic train protection (ATP) system, and MTR has replaced its original automatic train control (ATC) system. Both companies are constructing new lines.
