The notion of training supervisors to become more effective and teaching them how to make their employees more efficient is, arguably, a relatively new notion. This paper reviews human resources and personnel management techniques and theories to seek answers to such questions as: what is the best way to choose the right candidate; or what kind of training do first line supervisors need to be successful in their new positions? The paper recommends a training program with several components; such as: a thorough explanation of the company's structure, goals and values; a detailed explanation of the supervisors' responsibilities and duties, and how these duties are expected to be executed; and, a strong emphasis on interpersonal communication.
