CLEAR-WATER CONTRACTION SCOUR UNDER BRIDGES IN PRESSURE FLOW. DISCUSSION

A discussion of a technical note with the aforementioned title by E.R. Umbrell, G.K. Young, S.M. Stein, and J.S. Jones, published in this journal (Volume 124, Number 2, February 1998), is presented. The discusser outlines a better way to find the limit of clearwater scour and suggests that the limits of particle shear and critical tractive force should be the same upstream, under, and downstream of the bridge for the sediment-transporting case or for the approach flow.
