UPDATE ON THE INTRODUCTION OF THE EUROPEAN BLUE PARKING BADGE FOR DISABLED PEOPLE

This article is designed to update UK local authorities and parking enforcement officers about the current position on the introduction of a new European model disabled persons' parking badge. This badge will be easier for enforcement authorities to recognise, so that it will provide disabled motorists with parking privileges, and without fear of penalty, anywhere in the European Union (EU). Following consultations with their disability advisers, the Governments of EU member states made the decision to change to this new system. The new EU policy does not affect member states' criteria for eligibility, as parking badges will retain their national status but be designed according to the EU model. UK issuing authorities will introduce the new EU Blue Badge from 1 January 2000, as existing Orange Badges are due for renewal, or as new badge applications are processed. The article includes an illustration showing approximately the likely appearance of the Blue Badge.
