The development of urban areas is closely integrated with the form and structure of local and regional transportation systems. Improvements in transportation efficiency have been catalysts in both the definition of urban form and the siting and conduct of industry and commerce. Recently, there has been greater appreciation of the role of transportation and logistics with regard to the economic interdependence of regions, the cost of goods and services, and the productivity and competitiveness of firms and communities.
