RETROSPECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE RAIL RESEARCH PROGRAM
The railroad industry is expected to save millions of dollars as a result of improved track productivity and reliability. The article provides a retrospective assessments of this program that focused on the following two primary objectives: to develop a specification for rail that would significantly increase service life under the ever-increasing traffic axle loads without increasing the cost of rail beyond what is economically justified; and to develop, test and evaluate rail maintenance procedures in order to extend service life.
