TWO GREENS: A NEW SIGNAL ASPECT FOR HIGH-SPEED TRAIN ON WAYSIDE SIGNALING

The new wayside signaling method that provides a double green cycle before the appearance of the single green 'proceed' cycle was tested for its visibility and compatibility before it was put to practical use for the high speed trains in the Hokuhoku Line. 24 tests runs were performed by 12 drivers, on a 30 km (18 mi) stretch at the maximum speed of 160 km/h (100 mi/h). The drivers were able to identify, without any difficlty, the signals given for each of the test runs.
