THE STRUGGLE TO MAKE THE GRADE AT CROSSINGS

The Burbonnais tragedy occurred in March 1999 and it can be considered a wake-up call to the transportation world to begin a serious discussion on what it will take to prevent more train-truck collisions. This article discusses the possible role technology can play to prevent or mitigate crossing accidents. Railroads, suppliers, stateas and the Federal Railroad Administration are studying ways, from high tech gates to low tech median barriers, that could help prevent another train-track collision.
