GEORGIA CREATES NEW AGENCY TO PLAN FOR ATLANTA AREA

Atlanta's traffic and air pollution problems are notorious. The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) is expected to play a major role in transportation planning and implementation for the 13-county Atlanta region and other urban areas as they come under air quality restrictions. The big advantage of the new atuhority is that it pulls together power and money for design and implementation of a regional transportation plan. GRTA is authorized to design and build projects; operate them or turn them over to counties, cities, or private entities; and coordinate with agencies like MARTA, the Atlanta bus and rail system.
