STRENGTHENING OF CONCRETE BEAM-COLUMN JOINTS WITH CARBON FILTER COMPOSITES

A bridge bent at Highland Drive and Interstate 80 in Salt Lake City was retrofitted with carbon fiber composites in early September 1996. The rehabilitation of the bridge included wrapping of three columns with carbon fiber composites, as well as wrapping of three cap beam-column joints with carbon fiber composite jackets. The analysis and design performed for the study included flexural as well as shear calculations for the joints of the pier. In addition, confinement and shear calculations were performed for the columns. Experimental studies were performed specifically for evaluating the shear capacity of the beam-column joints wrapped with carbon fiber jackets. Both pre-impregnated fibers requiring thermal curing and field impregnated dry carbon fiber cloth cured at room temperature were investigated. The improvement in shear capacity was found to be significant.
