SESSION 1. STRUCTURAL STRENGTH AND COMPATIBILITY OF VEHICLES IN THE EVENT OF IMPACT. POTENTIAL HAZARDS TO OTHER MEANS OF TRANSPORT AND TO PEDESTRIANS

SESSION 1. COMPORTMENT DE LA STRUCTURE DES VEHICULES EN CAS DE CHOCS, COMPATIBILITE ENTRE VEHICULES, LEUR AGGRESSIVITE A L'EGARD DES AUTRES MOYENS DE TRANSPORT ET DES PIETONS

The improvement of vehicles can only be carried out in stages, however some essential aspects must be considered: (1) absolute necessity for vehicle occupants to use restraint systems; (2) optimum equilibrium between large and small vehicles in the event of impact so that the smaller vehicles are not subjected to unacceptable stresses; (3) urgency of standardizing the height of bumpers and placing them at a lower level, more appropriate in the event of vehicle/pedestrian collisions, and frontal and lateral collisions between vehicles; (4) necessity to take rapid action as regards safety standards for new vehicles, so that vehicles built in the 80s conform to these standards. /TRRL/
