AIRCRAFT GROUND DE/ANTI-ICING FLUID HOLDOVER TIME LABORATORY TEST PROGRAM: FREEZING DRIZZLE AND FREEZING RAIN

Describes a study undertaken to simulate freezing drizzle and freezing rain to substantiate Society of Automotive Engineers guidelines regarding fluid anti-icing performance under various types of freezing precipitation. A climatic chamber was set up to test typical deicing and anti-icing fluids under both types of precipitation. In the first phase of tests, several parameters were determined to simulate freezing drizzle and freezing rain in the chamber. Two plate set-ups were used in holdover time tests performed at temperatures from -5 to -14 C. Two test procedures were developed, based on the standard water spray endurance test. In the second phase, anti-icing performance tests were carried out under freezing drizzle and freezing rain conditions to determine the failure times of types I, II, and IV fluids. The three types of fluids demonstrated the effect of temperature on failure time. The anti-icing performance test results were compared with the holdover time range of the current guidelines. In the third phase, a preliminary study was undertaken to determine the effect of various test conditions.
