CHAPTER 28: THE BIKE BUSTERS FROM ARHUS, DENMARK 'WE'LL PARK OUR CARS FOR 200 YEARS...'. FROM THE GREENING OF URBAN TRANSPORT, EDITION 2.

Two hundred motorists from Arhus, Denmark were participants for a year in an experiment in leaving their cars at home and instead bicycling or using public transport. They have all received a new bicycle and bus pass free of charge on the condition that they try to use both as much as possible in their daily commuting. The project began on April 29, 1995 and ended on April 28, 1996. The Danish Heart Association also followed the participants through three health checks during the year. Although evaluation (as of 1997) is not complete, there are a number of indicators that are leading to the conclusion that the project has been successful. A mid-term statement has shown that the participants are leaving the car at home and instead using the bicycle. They already ride twice as much as the ordinary Arhusianer, and their health is better.
