REPAIR THE WEAR

Highway authorities in the Chinese province of Liaoning are combining American slurry surfacing technology with traditional Chinese techniques in building new roads there. A sophisticated plant was needed there, that could make superfine polymer-modified emulsion for slurry surfacing applications. The engineers quickly realised that a semi-continuous batch system was superior, because it would allow the easy manufacture of the slurry and microsurfacing emulsions with no injection problems and with a high level of quality control. A contract for the equipment and technical assistance was signed. The equipment has an integral latex injection system and can produce over 20t of emulsion per hour; it was found that it could make suitable emulsions without solvent. Experts from the USA installed the unit in the province's hot-mix facility at Fushun, and several visitors from the China Slurry Conference soon afterwards inspected the plant and watched as its first batch was used to lay slurry. The emulsifier was assessed for its compatibility with the aggregates and asphalt from the area.
