DURABILITY ASPECTS OF SECOND BRIDGE ACROSS THANE CREEK
In view of adverse experience of first bridge across Thane Creek which showed early signs of corrosion damages the Public Works Department of Maharashtra State was keen to ensure that the second bridge would provide enough resistance to corrosion damages. Certain special measures were therefore, prescribed at design and construction stages to ensure long term durability of the structure. Government also appointed Rendal Palmer and Tritton from UK, an internationally reputed consulting firm, as proof consultants, who were expected to review the specification, design and the construction practices and advise the Government suitably. The main recommendations made by Rendal Palmer and Tritton are also highlighted. (A)
