HIGH MAST AREA LIGHTING FOR GRADE SEPARATED INTERSECTION AT CHIRAG DELHI

Requirement of providing high level of illumination on high speed facilities like Flyovers for Grade Separated Intersections cannot be over-emphasized considering driving comfort and need for traffic safety. The requirement in a high density urban area is more complicated, due to presence of many other constraints like space, surrounding environment etc, and such areas warrant more intricate planning, design and installations. Providing High Mast Area lighting as a solution and alternative to the conventional lighting with street light poles, has been tried in one of the recently completed flyovers in Delhi at Chirag Delhi intersection on outer Ring Road. For the high mast lighting in India, the past practice laid greater emphasis on the illumination level design, taking structural system of the mast, as suggested by the manufacturer, as correct and acceptable on the premise that such masts being sent by foreign manufacturers would invariably be safe. But during the above project, the authors studied the case in detail and found that both the design of illumination level and structural design need judicious choice as well as detailed design.
