DETERMINATION OF BEARING CAPACITY OF BRIDGES FOUNDATION IN CASE OF SOFT ROCK

This paper deals with the determination of bearing capacity of soft rock. The soft rock was met in Pier No 4 of Mahi bridge which is across river Mahi on New Banswara-Ratlam road (Rajasthan). The bearing capacity of soft rock was decided on the basis of direct plate Load Bearing Test, boring log compressive strength, the rock cube prepared and its compressive strength. For calculation of safe bearing capacity factor of Safety 8 was considered. Determination of bearing capacity of soft rock is reliable by Plate Load method. If soft rock is uniform then factor of safety for determination of safe bearing capacity can be taken as 5. The authors conclude that the Plate Bearing Test is a reliable method for the determination of the bearing capacity of soft rock.
