ANALYSIS OF MOTORWAY ACCIDENTS IN RELATION TO DRIVER AND VEHICLE FACTORS AND TO SURVEILLANCE

UNFALI ANALYSE AUF AUTOBAHNEN UNTER BERUECKSICTIGUNG VEN BENKER-UND FAHRZEUG-FAKTOREN UND DER UEBENWACHUNG

Although motorways are the safest type of road, they always exhibit a significant number of black spots. Countermeasures are only effective when the complete relation between man, vehicle and highway is taken into account. Therefore additional data concerning the causes of accidents have to be found. For each accident a number of factors relating to the driver are collected (ie fatigue) and these data are compared with those obtained from a control group chosen at random from drivers stopped at the roadside. Because of the interdisciplinary approach, account is taken of structural conditions of the road and the accident situation. The interim report provides a first review of the data collected in the form of comparisons and graphs. /TRRL/
