POST-SHRP VALIDATION OF SHRP BINDER AND MIXTURE SPECIFICATIONS (WITH DISCUSSION)

The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) is focused on delivering the following two main products from the asphalt research efforts: (1) Performance-Based Asphalt Binder Specification; (2) Performance-Based Asphalt-Aggregate Mixture Specification including the Mix Design and Analysis System. The performance-based specifications address particular pavement performance factors. These are permanent deformation (rutting), load-associated fatigue cracking, and low-temperature cracking, and the modifying effects on these performance factors of moisture sensitivity, aging, and adhesion. Conceptually, it is envisioned that an engineer will be able to define the requirements for a new or a reconstructed asphalt pavement in terms of the required levels of serviceability by each of these distress factors for present and projected traffic loads and environmental conditions.
