PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALT MIXTURES IN THE TRAPEZOIDAL FATIGUE TEST (WITH DISCUSSION)

As part of the Strategic Highway Research Program and other work funded by Shell Development Company, a wide range of asphaltic mixtures have been evaluated using a Trapezoidal Fatigue Test. This paper contains an analysis of the results on the basis of cumulative dissipated energy (work) which appeared attractive in order to avoid differences arising from test type, mode of loading, test temperature, and frequency of loading. This paper demonstrates the importance of binder volume and mixture rheology and their relation to fatigue performance. The fatigue performance of 21 mixtures is presented along with the viscoelastic properties of each of the binders evaluated.
