A CONTRACTOR'S VIEW OF THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH DEEP EXCAVATIONS IN WATER-BEARING SOILS

LE POINT DE VUE DE L'ENTREPRENEUR SUR LES RISQUES QUE PRESENTENT LEW FOUILLES PROFONDES DAND DES COUCHES AQUIFERS

This paper considers some of the risks encountered when it is necessary to build large engineering structures that require the construction of large excavation pits that often enter deep into existing groundwater. The specific subject of the paper is the installation of artificial layers, such as uplift-safe or uplift-secured underwater concrete slabs where natural impermeable layers do not exist. The paper argues for the maintaining of the basic principle of good construction practice for all ground engineering, including the installation of grouted slabs.
