FOX HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT CANCELED BY GOVERNOR

The $6-billion Florida Overland Express (FOX) high-speed rail project, which would have linked Tampa, Orlando, and Miami with a bullet train, has effectively been canceled by Governor Jeb Bush, who is withholding additional funding in his 1999-2000 budget. The project, which was initially scheduled to be complete by 2007, would have been the first to bring 322 kph (200 mph) trains to the United States. The governor's concerns include the accuracy of ridership projections, wavering federal support, and uncertainty that the project would relieve congestion in Florida's urban centers.
