This article describes an advanced winter maintenance truck prototype and its development by industries such as Global Sensor Systems, Navistar, Norsemeter, and Rockwell International. Today, the prototype trucks have been in use on the roads for a year, and though still under modification, they're providing more effective and safer winter maintenance than anything the consortium states (Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan DOTs) have used before. A global positioning system constantly monitors the truck's location while a custom-designed friction measuring device called a ROAR meter reports the amount of friction between the tires and the road surface.
