GET ON BOARD -- AND STAY IN TOUCH WITH THE FUTURE

This article describes the operation of the SELTRAC automatic train control system based on the moving block principle. The system uses continuous train-to-wayside communication techniques to extract maximum performance from the vehicle and the guideway. Continuous monitoring and control of all vehicles on the system allows instant on-line adjustment of the optimum distance between trains. In addition to reduced headways, this continuous communication with each vehicle provides such advantages as: control of the complete speed profile; enforcement of temporary speed restrictions; full bi-directional operation without additional wayside hardware; and central monitoring of sub-systems.
