PREPARING TOMORROW'S TRANSPORTATION WORKFORCE: INTRODUCTION
The author, President of the National Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the National Research Council, gives an introduction to this issue of TR News that focuses on education, his favorite subject. He points out that this issue also fits into the broader context of what the Academy is doing in the area of education, and that we are at a crucial time in terms of educational opportunities. He urges that we recognize that science and mathematics are critical for all students, that we recognize that science and math are about learning how to solve real-world problems through hands-on curricula that motivate students, and that we connect science and math to social studies and history. He concludes by stating that transportation offers an especially effective and practical means for helping students recognize the relevance of science and math to their everyday lives.
