Field measurements have been carried out to investigate the propagation of traffic noise for ten different road and housing configurations. The shielding produced by a substantial brick wall parallel to a main road, and the effect of an aperture in such a barrier, has been measured and results compared with data for open grassland. Shielding by rows of houses flanking a main road and noise propagation along side-roads branching off main roads has been investigated in detail, and empirical curves are presented for predicting levels of l10 in such situations.(a) /TRRL/
