EVALUATION OF COMPOSTED MATERIALS TO BE UTILIZED IN FLORIDA ROADSIDE AND MEDIAN PLANTINGS

Field, laboratory, and greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate and recommend specifications for compost as a soil amendment in roadside plantings. The three-year project examined germination, growth, and establishment of utility turf in soil amended with commercially produced compost. The primary objectives were: to provide the fundamental information needed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for proper utilization of various composted waste materials in roadside plantings; to assist FDOT in establishing standards and specifications for use of composted waste materials; and to provide FDOT with educational and promotional materials pertaining to use of composted waste materials. Included with the final report are a video and an information folder, both entitled "Improving Roadside Vegetation With Compost".
