DESIGN STAGES OF A MOTORWAY

The paper provides a picture of motorway design methodology. It discusses the conceptual links connecting the various design phases, and the main criteria of the technical and economic feasibility studies are given, emphasizing the relationships between regional, social and economic characteristics and transportation needs. A new way to design is pointed out; this design identifies, in the preliminary design, the core of the whole process and requests the tightest collaboration among economic, functional and environmental features of the project. Additionally, the final design problems are investigated, mainly through the documentation related to motorways designed and built in Italy in the last few years.
