DARK HORSE WINS BAY BRIDGE DESIGN

A self-anchored suspension bridge design has won a hotly contested public battle over the estimated $1.3 billion replacement of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The design will be the longest single-tower, self-anchored span in the world. The seismic criteria for the bridge are extremely stringent, requiring immediate use after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on the Hayward Fault and an earthquake of more than 8 on the San Andreas Fault. Another design challenge was making the single tower attractive. The new design will replace the double-decker span damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic in 2004.
