WASHINGTON UPDATE
The article presents six short highlights of recent traffic safety advances. The following topics are covered: safety provisions in the reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act; a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study concludes that center, high-mounted brake lights enhance safety; an NHTSA study finds higher injuries for passenger car occupants when involved in crashes with light trucks or sport utility vehicles; air-bag switches have received a modest reception from the public; an NHTSA study finds part-time safety belt users outnumber nonusers; and Toyota Motor Corporation's Sienna van and Avalon medium-sized passenger car received top ratings in NHTSA's second group of crash tests of 1998-model vehicles.
