THE HAMILTON-WENTWORTH COMMUNITY CYCLING SURVEY
In order to justify the existence of a bicycle network and to substantiate the need for further improvements, a representative sample of the population of the urban area of Hamilton-Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, was surveyed to determine community cycling needs. Results demonstrated the 7.4% of the urban, adult population cycled frequently (three or more times per week) for transportation purposes. In addition, 39% cycled at least occasionally for either transportation and/or recreational purposes. The biggest obstacles to cycling were inconvenience, the speed and volume of motorized traffic, and time constraints. The most requested system improvements were wider curb lanes, marked bicycle lanes, improved trails, and increased enforcement.
