DESIGN OF ORDINARY BRIDGES FOR VERTICAL SEISMIC ACCELERATION

The Orange County California Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) has built three toll roads since 1989 using special seismic design criteria for bridges. The Corridor Design Management Group (CDMG) is the design manager for TCA. CDMG prepared the special TCA criteria, which features a two level seismic design aimed at improving the reliability of the structures. Some particular bridge failures in the 1994 Northridge earthquake in California showed evidence that the superstructure failed at the piers, in flexure or shear or a combination. Apparently vertical acceleration contributed to these failures. As a result, CDMG added vertical acceleration provision to the TCA seismic design criteria for the Eastern Transportation Corridor toll road which was bid under a design/build contract in late 1994.
