A STUDY OF DRIVER EDUCATION AND SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENT SKILL AND SAFE DRIVING PERFORMANCE: THE DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY TO EVALUATE DRIVER EDUCATION CURRICULA

Twenty-four subjects were tested in this experiment to try to assess the skill and safe driving characteristics learned in a high school driver education curriculum. Twelve subjects were 16 year-old high school students. These students were tested in two sessions, one immediately before their driver education course and the second session immediately after their course. Also, six subjects who were in high school special education classes (I.Q. below 80) and had previously taken driver education were tested in one session. Six experinced drivers also took all the tests once. The tests used included road tests of car handling and maneuvering skills, use of safe driving practices, and freeway driving skills and judgments. A written test which included knowledge of a car and its operation was also included. Results showed a significant improvement of driver education students in all areas during their driver education course. The special education students were significantly poorer than experienced subjects only in the written knowledge test, and the driver education group was significantly poorer than experienced subjects in their "post driver-education" testing in some maneuvering skill tests and the written knowledge test. /HRIS/
